Can I say WOW!!! UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 🇺🇸 Martin Puryear: Liberty. With this exhibition in the US Pavilion, Martin Puryear has said that he represents his country as both an artist and a citizen. This position is not a discovery for those who know the artist and his work. Puryear’s enduring approach has galvanised his sculpture made by hand in the studio for more than five decades: issues of allegiance, democracy, and liberty have long propelled him. Viewers can learn how an artist’s treatment of a symbolic but tangible human subject – namely, liberty – can be best expressed in sculptural form through an abstract visual language of great originality and certitude. .. . . . . . . #martinpuryearvenice #usa #veniceitaly #artistlife #wow #venicebiennale2019 #inspiration #ilovevenice #travelersnotebook #art #contemporaryart #martinpuryear #melissaherringtonart

Last day of work in the U.S Pavilion represented by Martin Puryear for the 58th Biennale Arte di Venezia. Met so many beautiful souls, crossed hundreds of bridges, swept the autumn leaves in front of the pavilion, consumed too much cheese and Valpolicella lol. Now I have another treasure chest to keep full of memories and lovely people. Grazie Peggy Guggenheim, grazie Venezia, a dopo! Now off to new beginnings🥂 #biennalearte2019 #uspavilion #martinpuryear #martinpuryearvenice

🇺🇸 MARTIN PURYEAR 🇺🇸 ▫️ “Liberty” | U.S. Pavillion | Venice Biennale ▫️ Happy 4th of July! In honor of Independence Day, I’m sharing some highlights from the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, which housed a fantastic show by the American artist Martin Puryear. Puryear’s minimalist sculptures incorporate historical references that bring to light the social and political dynamics that define our world. Each work in “Liberty” carries a powerful and thought-provoking story, conveying Puryear’s theme of liberty through elegant, minimalist forms. ▫️ The red sculpture in the first slide is actually a huge version of the hats worn during the French Revolution, and the black sculpture in second slide similarly depicts the Union’s hats from the American Civil War. Both of these works remind us that liberty and freedom aren’t necessarily free — they come at the steep cost of revolution and war. ▫️ The work in the third slide was without a doubt the most powerful. Titled, “A Column for Sally Hemings,” the tall, slender sculpture sits in the center of the pavilion, anchoring the entire exhibition. The work is a monument for Sally Hemings, an enslaved woman who had an unconsentual sexual relationship with Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States. Puryear wanted to acknowledge Jefferson’s troubling past because the U.S. Pavilion is styled after Jefferson’s plantation in Virginia, Monticello. ▫️ The fourth work, titled “New Voortrekker,” represents the delicacy of colonization. The Dutch title references the Great Trek, the journey of Dutch settlers through colonial South Africa. In Puryear’s sculpture, the wagon, a symbol of colonization, is perfectly balanced on a wooden plank. But any forward movement will cause the entire foundation to collapse, just as colonizers are capable of destroying entire indigenous communities. ▫️ #martinpuryear #venicebiennale #biennale #biennalevenezia #biennalearte2019 #peggyguggenheimcollection #artmuseum #moma #museumofmodernart #whitneymuseum #guggenheim #sfmoma #tatemodern #artgallery #gallerywall #instart #contemporarysculpture #sculptures #sculptor #arthistory #arthistorynerd #museumaddict

Martin Puryear represents the United States at the 58th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, which opens to the public this Saturday, May 11th. For “Martin Puryear: Liberty/Libertà,” commissioned and curated by Brooke Kamin Rapaport, Deputy Director and Martin Friedman, Senior Curator of Madison Square Park Conservancy, the artist created an entirely new body of work, including new sculpture and a site-specific outdoor installation for the Pavilion’s forecourt titled “Swallowed Sun (Monstrance and Volute),” an enormous, bright lattice-work screen with a black, snake-like support that curls upwards. . . . . . #martinpuryear #biennaledivenezia #venicebiennale2019 #biennalearte2019 #venicebiennale #biennale #uspavilion #liberty #unitedstates #usa #installationart #art #contemporaryart #sitespecificart #madsqpark #venice #venezia #italy

The 58th Venice Biennale opened to the press today with a flourish: Lara Favaretto’s fog pouring out of the former Italia Pavilion, now one of the venues for the director, Ralph Rugoff’s, main show (water vapour, it seems, was a bit of a trend: it engulfed the outside of the French Pavilion too). With an Art Newspaper podcast to prepare for – it comes out on Friday – my focus was pretty much on Rugoff’s show, but here is a shortlist of my favourite pavilions in the Giardini so far. L-to-R: Foggy start for Rugoff’s show; Martin Puryear’s meditative show in the US Pavilion (2 pics); Laure Prouvost’s magical odyssey in the French Pavilion (2 pics); ambitious and emotive engineering from Natascha Süder Happelmann in the German Pavilion (2 pics).

“Martin Puryear: Liberty / Libertà” at the U.S. Pavilion at #biennalearte2019 . . Repost: @rcembalest “Liberty” now: details from #MartinPuryear’s elegant & nuanced show in the US pavilion. Inside, sculptures including “A Column for Sally Hemings” & “New Voortrekker” add layers to the American story looking back & forward
